Our special reporters, who are at the Olympics right now, are sharing with us their impressions of the atmosphere, reigning in the Olympic capital these days:
Vika: “It is great that the Olympics unite so many nations. And today our biathlon team helped the Germans with the equipment, so that they could participate in the games and have a fair competition with us. Their lubrication machine broke. And our team lent them their own machine for the night without asking for anything in return”.

Isn’t it a paradox? The qualities, which are so rare among humans today, we call “genuine humaneness”! The situations at the Olympics that become such surprises for us, we call the showing of the “Olympic spirit”! Doesn’t logics tell us that we should call the characteristics which are true about most human beings today –selfishness, profit motives, hard-heartedness – “the humaneness”? Shouldn’t we call the desire of victory by any means, no matter what – “the showing of the Olympic spirit?”
But this paradox itself, as well as the great joy that we experience together with Anton and Vika, enjoying the unusual atmosphere of unity and brotherhood of people and the situations which show true unselfish love – all that only proves one thing: in each person’s heart there is a deep understanding that these things are right, that these things should be NORMAL! But unfortunately, such moments are not the norm – they are exceptions. The following fact is another proof of it: the Medal of Pier de Coubertin, the reward which is considered to be much higher than even the gold Olympic medal, is not given to every sportsman participating in the Olympics. It is only given to very few people who make deeds “in the Olympic spirit” during the Games!
Our friends and special reporters at the Sochi Olympics are actually an example of “the Olympic spirit” for us! That is what they wrote this morning, while broadcasting live from the slope-style women’s competition: “This girl fell down and got badly hurt while warming-up. May God restore her health!”
It does not matter which country she is from, which team she is in. She is a human being who is in pain now. And that is why our friends do everything they can do right now to help her – they pray for her to the Almighty God, Who created all the nations and Who gave His Son Jesus Christ for this girl too, as well as for each human being in the world. God loves each person, despite the color of their skin, their sex, their age, their nationality. And it is God’s love that can unite us and help us be humane – the way He meant us to be!
