Today is only the 3rd day of the Olympics, but the Internet is already full of contradicting information… Some people notice all the pluses of the Games in Sochi, others focus just on the minuses and drawbacks.
People following the Olympics can be divided into two groups according to what they would tell Russia for the way it organized this huge event: “Shame on you!” or “Well done!” That is, it’s almost like a sentence: “Put to death” or “Pardon”. Many people choose the former - like a silly princess from a soviet cartoon: she chose to write “Kill” in her royal decrees, because it was easier and shorter to write than “Have mercy upon…”.
Those who pay more attention to the drawbacks - write about the unfinished repairs, mistakes in translations of menus, stray dogs in the streets of Sochi, and some “unique” toilets :-)
But all these things distract their attention from lots of good things other people appreciate. For example, that is what our independent reporters write, being in the heart of the Olympic capital:
- The seafront is the exact copy of the St.Petersburg riverside!
- The ethnographic museum is amazing: our county’s history is represented with houses, and each of them demonstrates a specific époque. The museum is in Rosa Hutor. We walked there today – it is awesome! Each house is not only a small museum by itself – it is also a hotel!

- Some people say that there are lots of unfinished buildings here… But that is not true! Everything is finished, and everything is on a very high level! The people of Sochi, Adler, of the Rosa Hutor resort now have new transportation, airport, train station, cableway! In 2012 we went to Poland for Euro 2012 Soccer Championship – and there they had nothing like what we see here in Sochi!
- The “Lastochka” (“Swallow”) train meets all the European standards!
- It actually feels like it is not Russian, but a European city. The new infrastructure here is great!

- By the way, unlike the other Olympics, the volunteers in Sochi don’t have to pay anything: their accommodation, food, clothes (2 pairs of shoes, pants, sports costumes, etc.) are free.
Why is it more difficult to appreciate major advantages, than to pay attention to minor drawbacks?

The thing is that our human nature, spoilt with sin, tends to be discontent with everything. That is why God tells us trough the Bible: “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions” (Proverbs 10:12). He also gives us these commands: “Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins” (1Peter 4:8) and also: “…in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus” (1Thessalonians 5:18).
How do we change our attitude and learn to pay more attention to the good sides and not the shortcomings?
